“Train
the Young Women”
(Titus
2:3-5)
[3] Older
women likewise are to be reverent in behavior,
It
is wonderful to have solid, honorable, reverent men in the church who
are healthy in faith, love, and steadfastness. But they cannot do
everything that the Lord calls the church to do. We need older women
in the faith who are also full of godliness. They must not only know
the truths of Christ in their hearts. They must express those truths
in the best ways of godly living; not showing off, but living lives
that show the grace that could only come from above.
not
slanderers or slaves to much wine.
Godly
living that flows from the truth and power of Christ cannot include
slander (King James: “false accusers”) or drunkenness. The second
can easily lead to the first. Too much wine loosens the tongue and
then suddenly a daughter of Abraham can become an accuser in her
speech rather than what she is by the grace of Jesus, a woman who
honestly serves the King of truth and love who died on a cross
They
are to teach what is good, [4] and so train the young women
Godly
mature women are essential to the life of the church. They are the
best and safest teachers of young women. They do not need to be
perfect, but they do need to treasure the living Word of God in their
hearts. They do need to know where to go when they sin.
to
love their husbands and children,
These
mature godly women need to know how to love and serve their husbands
and children with integrity and a holy gentleness. They are living
out Micah 6:8. Not only will younger women take notice of that, but
so will their husbands, children, grandchildren, and all of the
extended family.
[5] to
be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to
their own husbands,
Their
life at home will grant to them many opportunities to show their love
for God and others. Women like this live out the cross of Christ and
teach it to others. They learn the Word and live it out by the Spirit
of holiness. They have been cleansed by the blood of the Lamb, and
they live a pure life. They have seen the work that Christ did for
them, and as partakers of grace and heirs of eternal life they want
to be pure.
Is
this an ugly version of life to many today? These women know that God
is right no matter how confused the world may be. They are
continually being filled with the Holy Spirit, continually repenting,
continually believing in Christ alone as their only hope. That is the
only way that they can be hard-working, kind, and submissive to their
husbands in the midst of the spiritual battlefield that family life
can be. These women have something to teach. They need to do that
with their lives, their friendships, and their words of
encouragement.
that
the word of God may not be reviled.
If
they do not they and others will follow a different road. May it
never be. None of us wants to bring disgrace on the Name that has
brought us such abundant heavenly life.
